Vitamins and their Protective Impact on our Health - Vitamin C

WHO´s definition of health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

No animate being lives in a perfect - and for the being optimal - environment. The human being needs approximately 45 different nutrients. All those nutrients need to be in the organism in the proper concentration, to achieve perfect well-being and extensive protection against diseases. With progressive age, diseases and environmental influences, the demand for orthomolecular substances is strongly growing. This need cannot be covered by usual eating habits. To the group of orthomolecular substances belong:

•    Vitamins
•    Oxidizing agents
•    Minerals
•    Micro nutrients
•    Fatty acids
•    Amino acids
•    Enzymes

Biochemically seen each human being is different. The recommended consumption guide lines are valid for healthy average people, not for athletes, smokers, people who have to breathe in air which is strongly contaminated with exhaust emissions, such as truck drivers, people who drink excessive amounts of alcohol, people under high mental stress, people in a state of reconvalescence and sick persons. Orthomolecular substances truly furnish health, not only the absence of diseases – but the state of real well-being.

The basis of orthomolecular medicine is an appropriate diet rich in nutrients. To be recommended is a whole food nutrition from biological cultivation with a maximum amount of orthomolecular ingredients.
The following guide lines should be observed:

•    to employ food as provided by nature, or minimally processed
•    to consume more vegetables
•    to eat more fish
•    to drink abundantly water, with 60 kg of weight about 3 liters
•    to reduce the intake of sugar to 10 grams, to avoid white sugar as much

      as possible in favor of brown sugar or honey
•    no lemonades, as they contain about 100 grams of sugar per liter
•    moderate consumption of alcohol, roughly 1 glass of wine per day
•    no smoking
•    nutrition supplements such as vitamins, anti-oxidants, minerals and
      micro elements and also essential fatty acids


Diet in former times – Diet nowadays

There are fundamental differences between the diet, humanity has adapted to in the course of hundred thousands of years, and the diet of today. As hunters and gatherers we consumed many vitamins, minerals, roughage, proteins, starch and little fat.
To a large extent salt and sugar in pure form were lacking. The cells were adjusted to those huge amounts of orthomolecular substances.
The modern human body has not yet adapted itself to the industrially processed diet of today. The sugar consumption of today is up to ten times higher than in earlier times. The intake of fat is has doubled and the quality of the fat consumed is totally different - with regards to its composition - from that of earlier times. (In past times we consumed mainly fatty acids which were highly unsaturated and multiple unsaturated, such as Omega-3 fatty acids). Today we mainly consume saturated fatty acids.

The amount of consumed vitamins, especially vitamin C, was considerably higher than that of today. The same applies for the intake of roughage (natural fiber).  Also a lot more calcium was consumed, but less natrium (see table on page 27 No. 1 by  Ohrenschläger; Manual of Orthomolecular Medicine).


There are clear indications, that an optimal supply of vitamins and minerals can delay the aging process by roughly 10 years. In laboratory tests with mice it has definitely been proved that - by administering vitamins - their life span was prolonged by approximately 20 %.


Each single drag of a cigarette contains a million Free Radicals. To render those harmless and to bond them, the body needs before anything else antioxidants. Antioxidants are : Vitamin Q10, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin E, Selenium.
Following Japanese examinations a higher intake of those vitamins decreases significantly the health risk of smoking.

Vitamin C   - Introduction-

Vitamin C belongs to the water-soluble vitamins. Almost all animal species are able to synthesize vitamin C with the aid of enzymes. The human being is dependant from the food supply to ingest the vitamin from there. The functions of vitamin C are extremely multiple.

Most animals can produce vitamin C themselves by employing endogenous enzymes.  Only human beings have to feed vitamin C from external supply, as their organisms have un-learned how to synthesize vitamin C. Rich in natural vitamin C are the following products: Citrus fruits, black current, rose hip, sea buckthorn, kiwi, potato.

The average daily demand amounts to 1000 – 10000 mg, when diseased with viral disorders more. In our latitudes all people suffer from a lack of vitamin C. What we take in with our diet is scarcely enough to protect us from deficiency and its consequences, as  serious inner bleedings, loss of teeth and finally death due to feebleness.  A side effect of a very high dosage of vitamin C is diarrhea. This, however, can be avoided by an appropriate production of  vitamin C. It is advisable to take vitamin C as a coated drug, as the coat layer ensures that the vitamin C molecules are absorbed more slowly by the intestine, which makes sure that the percentage of vitamin C in the blood is kept at a constant  level.

Bioflavonoids are the most important plant pigments. They are extracted for example from red and green peppers, strawberries, tomatoes and elder. Bioflavonoids cannot be produced by the body itself, they have to be supplied by food. Bioflavonoids boost the absorption of vitamin C  by 20 times. Therefore they should be eaten  together at the same time. American doctors employ bioflavonoids when sporting injuries have occurred. Bioflavonoids  have antibacterial properties, improve blood circulation, and stimulate the secretion of gall, lower the level of cholesterol, and prevent cataracts. Taken together with vitamin C, the bioflavonoids mitigate the symptoms of Herpes simplex. The daily recommended amount of bioflavonoids is 500 mg according to American guide lines. Vitamin C is a water-soluble essential vitamin.  Essential means that it cannot be produced by the body itself. Plants and most animals are able to synthesize them with the aid of enzymes. In the course of the evolution the human being has un-learned the endogenous synthesis. –Due to this reason the human organism of today depends on the supply of vitamin C by food or supplementary nutrition. Vitamin C is water-soluble and cannot be stored in the body, that means that we have to take it in daily several times.

Vitamin C is vital for body functions

Vitamin C helps to heal wounds as it favors the collagen synthesis. Vitamin C strengthens the immune system and protects us from cancer, by blocking the production of nitrosamines. Together with folic acid, tyrosine and phenylalanine it is involved in producing interferon, an antibody of our organism. Vitamin C favors the absorption of iron and prevents blood from coagulating. It generates neurotransmitters in the brain and assists the synthesis of kinetin.

Vitamin C protects the body from Free Radicals

Free Radicals are harmful compounds, that may result in diseases. Vitamin C is the most important water-soluble scavenger of radicals.

I.    Chapter

Vitamin C – the scavenger

Vitamin C protects the body from Free Oxygen Radicals. Free Radicals are hazardous compounds that develop in the body due to mental and physical stress, competitive sports, smoking, pollution of the environment. They are the cause for many illnesses. The body resists the radicals by so-called scavengers, for example vitamin C. 

Vitamin C is the most important scavenger soluble in water. It belongs to the chemical redox reaction system that means it can absorb hydrogen and also release it again.

By dispensing hydrogen, called oxidation, vitamin C protects body substances, such as hormones and enzymes, from oxidation, what is synonymous to loss of activity.  Vitamin C is a so-called antioxidant. For restoration purposes the dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) has to re-absorb hydrogen (called reduction), and to do so it needs a provider of hydrogen, for example glutathione, vitamin E, NADP and NAD. Vitamin C fulfills as part of the redox reaction system many essential functions in the body. Vitamin C is a necessary co-factor for many enzymes and therefore has an important role in the vital processes of the body.

1.    Detoxification

The detoxification of harmful substances from the body is often preceded by a chemical alteration due to hydroxylation. If the body lacks vitamin C, then those chemical changes are significantly smaller, and the body is not capable to detoxify properly.

1.1    Vitamin C safeguards from damages due to alcohol consumption

Vitamin C as a co-partner partakes in the degradation of toxic substances in the liver. Vitamin C supports the detox from alcohol, bacteria, toxins and assists in improving conditions like acne, diphtheria, tetanus.

1.2    Vitamin C abates the stress deriving from heavy metals

Vitamin C is able to reduce the hazardous effects of chrome, mercury, plumb, cadmium, and amalgam. It helps to reduce the absorption of those elements into the blood. Heavy metal contamination results in skin alterations, loss of hair, lack of concentration and fatigue.

1.3    Vitamin  C detoxifies carcinogenic substances

1.4    Vitamin C – number one among the water-soluble scavengers

In the process of combustion of food implying the transformation of  dioxygen always harmful compounds will emerge, the so-called Free Radicals. Usually about 2 to 5 % of the oxygen, used up in the cell for retrieval of energy, will be transformed – under optimal conditions – into the existence of Free Radicals. Is the body exposed to a higher level of stress, the turnover of oxygen augments, and therefore also the turnover of oxygen, and consequently the formation of radicals under psychological stress, fear, physical strain due to competitive sports, and physical labor, illness, air pollution, cigarette smoke, UV-radiation, and radioactivity. In line with the corresponding high body stress the formation of radicals can rise up to 50% , that is ten times more than under optimal conditions. That is what is understood by oxidative stress for the body. Free Radicals, in those cases, damage the components of the cells and result in serious degenerative illnesses, like premature process of aging, diseases of the heart, damages to the nerves, acute inflammations  such as rheumatism and arthritis, Fibromyalgia (functional disturbances of the immune system), development of cancer, amyasthenia, tissue deficit, organ impairments.

To defend against the Free Radicals nature has created a broad range of tools, the so-called antioxidants, of which vitamin C is one besides Q10, Beta-carotene, Selenium, Vitamin E. As vitamin C is by far the most efficient water-soluble scavenger, it is – due to the fact that the body consists of roughly 80 % of water – highest importance as a protective factor in the watery body ambience.
II.    Vitamin C as Activator of the Immune System

The task of the immune system is to protect us from bacteria, viruses, and cancerous cells. The vitamins A, the vitamin B12, the Panthotenic acid, the folic acid  and the vitamin C strengthen the immune system, above all when taken in higher dosage then the 75 mg/per day recommended by the German Nutrition Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung). Vitamin C increases motility and activity, and also the quantity of defense cells, i.e. macrophages and lymphocytes. In the specific defense immune cells there is up to 40 times more vitamin C than in the blood (cit.  2, 42, 73 by Enzmann)

If daily 1 gram of vitamin C is taken in, then the quantity of the specific defense cells  (Immunoglobulin) rises definitely. (cit. Enzmann 76, 88)

Lymphocytes are the most important phagocytes fighting cancer and other diseases.  The higher the number the higher the chances for a favorable course of disease.  A research by Hume and Weyer, 1973, has revealed that persons enjoying a usual Scottish nutrition and in a good state of health, had more ascorbic acid in their leucocytes  than had been necessary for the efficacy of the phagocytes. The vitamin C content dropped to half of its value after they caught a cold. With that the susceptibility of secondary bacterial infections increased. A dose rate of 6 gram at the beginning of a cold and then daily 1 gram vitamin C were sufficient for the maintenance of a functioning immune system. Pauling, 1974, drew the conclusion that the dosage of ascorbic acid for the maintenance of a healthy condition and as a protective means against infections, had to be higher than 200 mg per day for most people. Pauling recommends a dose rate between 4000 mg and 10000 mg for most people. Irvin Stone, 1972, reports the following about vitamin C:

•    It kills bacteria and has bacteriostatic effects, i.e. it prevents the 
      formation of new bacteria.

•    It deletes bacterial toxins and renders them harmless.

•    It controls the phagocytose and sustains it.

•    It is harmless and non-toxic and may be administered in a high dosage,

      necessary for obtaining the above mentioned results.
